Profile

Dr. Alisteir Norton trained at Flinders University from 1984-1989. Following an internship at Flinders Medical centre he worked in NSW at Sydney’s Royal North shore hospital in the area of cardiology and Intensive care before returning to Adelaide to commence specialist anaesthetic training. He gained his fellowship in 1998 after completing a year of regional anaesthesia and then started working as a specialist at Flinders medical centre and in private practise.

He has worked in most states around Australia as well as a spending some time in Papua New guinea teaching and writing a chapter in a book dedicated to regional anaesthesia in the third world.

He has a past history of working in cardio thoracic anaesthesia and liver transplantation. His main area of interest is now Ear nose and throat Anaesthesia working particularly with children, as well as having an interest in adult sleep apnoea in which he has published. Other interests include orthopaedic surgery.

Outside of work he has a wife and two beautiful children as well as being the owner of two large Saint Bernard dogs.

Adelaide born and bred, Dr. Porter undertook his Anaesthetic training throughout the major Adelaide hospitals as well as the Royal Darwin Hospital. Indeed, it was whilst training as a registrar in the Intensive Care Unit in Darwin he was heavily involved in the care and management of casualties from the second Bali Bombings in 2005. In addition to the standard 5 years of anaesthetic training, Dr. Porter has undertaken advanced Fellowship training in Regional & Orthopaedic Anaesthesia in Perth, and a Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellowship at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Adelaide.

Being a keen teacher, Dr. Porter is a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the University of Adelaide where he has received citations for teaching excellence for teaching of undergraduate medical students.

Dr. Porter is committed to the pursuit of clinical and research excellence in Anaesthesia. Dr. Porter established the Fellowship Programme in the field of Regional Anaesthesia at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. This program encourages the professional development of senior trainee anaesthetists through the mastering of advanced clinical skills as well encouraging research pursuits.

Regarded as a local leader, mentor and innovator in the field of Regional and Orthopaedic Anaesthesia, Dr. Porter is on teaching faculty of a number of Regional Anaesthesia courses and workshops throughout Australia and is regularly invited to speak at such meetings as well as to his surgical peers. Dr. Porter is also engaged in the wider anaesthetic community and has served as Vice Chair and Treasurer of the S.A. Committee of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists.

Training

Richard is originally from Adelaide and completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Adelaide Medical School. His anaesthesia training commenced at Leighton Hospital in Crewe in the UK. He completed his training as part of the North Thames Central School of Anaesthesia and held training appointments at The Middlesex Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital, Great Ormond St, Stanmore and other North London DGH’s. Richard was appointed as a consultant anaesthetist at the Royal National Throat Nose & Ear Hospital (RNTNE) in 1999, which is a tertiary referral centre for head and neck surgery in central London.

In 2003, he returned to Adelaide with his young family, completed the Australian anaesthetic fellowship and was appointed as a staff specialist at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. In 2006, he commenced working in the private sector and recently has made the move to the exciting new group at Pulse. Richard remains the SSU Supervisor for FANZCA training program in Head and Neck Anaesthesia and enjoys the balance of working in both the private and public sector.

Dr Ward enjoys a diverse practice working in many hospitals across Adelaide between both public and private appointments. He is a senior staff specialist in Anaesthesia at Flinders Medical Centre, with an interest in teaching, and is currently the supervisor of training of the provisional fellowship program.

Dr Ward completed a fellowship in Vascular, ENT surgery and Liver Transplant anaesthesia at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2008, and enjoys providing care for complex and high risk procedures. He has extensive experience in Paediatric anaesthesia, and regularly works with paediatric dental surgeons and ENT surgeons. He also provides ECT anaesthesia and was on the ECT advisory committee who developed State guidelines in 2013.

He is strongly committed to continuing professional development, and regularly attends national and international conferences, workshops and seminars to ensure his practice is evidence-based. He has also presented at both state and national conference
